Some items that have previously been purchased include a portrait of a dog made with dog hair, a human bone dagger and a Malaysian blow gun. But your item doesn’t have to be an oddity. Ripley’s buyers have also purchased items such as historical documents and Major League Baseball gear. Ripley’s experts will be happy to give your item an ‘odd-praisal’, and if you do bring an item you get free admission!!!
The event is part of The Space Center’s Cosmic Spring Break which runs through the 22nd. So go dust off that odd little momento, or check out that trunk that hasn’t been opened for years. With a growth rate of 1.82% Houston is one of the most dynamic cities in America. There are many reasons why. Low unemployment, low taxes and a business friendly environment all draw thousands to the Houston Metroplex. But explosive growth can have downsides. Urban sprawl and traffic jams have been a problem in the past.
Seeing these problems visionaries in Houston have taken action to make the city’s growth sustainable. After receiving a “D” grade in sustainability in 2008 the University of Houston has become one of the top green campuses in America. Long known for it’s sprawl and traffic problems the city has embarked on the building of a state of the art light rail system. The City Energy Project is an ambitious city funded program intended to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
One of the most interesting developments is Houston’s involvement in the Future Cities Project. This program recruits middle school students to compete against other cities to come up with ideas for the future of their home town. One of the events uses the popular SimCity software to turn students’ imaginary ideas into working models. The Houston team has won in this category.

Tomorrow is an important day. For more than three centuries, Scotland has been part of a united kingdom with Wales, England, and Northern Ireland. That may be coming to an end. With the vote for independence so near, Scotland’s economy may run into trouble.
Back in the early 80s, our economy was taking a beating. Like Scotland today, our economy was based on oil. While we came out of it doing quite well financially, it was only due to massive changes in our economy.
One big thing Texas has going for it is infrastructure. Our road system is great, our pipelines can send tremendous amounts of oil to market, and our rail system is well-connected. The only reason our infrastructure has difficulties at all is that our production of oil and gas is increasing so much. Another thing is the diversity of our economy. From soda giants to insurance companies and moving companies like ourselves, the Texas economy is designed to draw diverse businesses.
This is where Scotland falls behind. They lack both the infrastructure and diversity of the Texas economy. They will either need to develop both and follow a Texan path or to find another means of economic self-sufficiency.
Other examples of oil rich states are California, Alaska, and North Dakota. While California generates a tremendous amount of gdp, expenses are incredibly high. Their efforts to keep energy production sustainable are commendable, but not possible for a new nation struggling to stand independently. Alaska generates a ton of gdp per capita, but only because their population is so small. North Dakota is growing to be impressive, but it’s still not enough yet. It seems that Texas is going to be the best model for Scotland in the US. Then again, the vote may leave the Scots where they are.

Sitterle Homes, a San Antonio home building company, has announced plans to build a new luxury housing community in Katy. They will break ground in September at the intersection of Roesner Road and Saddlehorn Lane. The new development, called Roesner Woods, will have 17 houses, individually gated, on a third of an acre each.
Houston division president of Sitterle Homes, Steve Von Hofe, says that the community is nestled in the middle of Katy’s school district and will have above average property sizes. Katy also has an established municipal utility district which makes the taxes much lower for the community.
The homes will come in six different designs — 6 one-story designs and 6 two-story designs. The house will range from 3,400 – 4,700 square feet. Houses will have courtyards, wine cellars, expansive kitchens, and many other amenities.
Sitterle Homes operates against the new trend developing in housing development. Today, houses are getting smaller and smaller, but not Sitterle’s. Despite the growing trend, Sitterle still is very successful in the Houston market. Since arriving in Houston in March of 2013, it has built in several developments in the area, including Riverstone. Riverstone was the highest ranked Houston community on a national list that ranked housing communities based on the number of homes sold by mid-year. Even though they operate against the trend, their homes are still a hot commodity as many of the communities they are building in are selling out.

Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas, and the cities fourth area code only reflects that fact. The Public Utility Commission of Texas announced this past Monday that Houston will be getting a new area code on July 1st.
Houston’s current area codes are 713, 281 and 832. The North American Number Planning Administration projects that if the current rate is kept up then these current area codes will run out by the end of September. The NANPA has assigned the new code of 346 to the Houston area.
Houston’s current population is 2.2 million people, and that does not include the population of the cities numerous suburbs and residential areas. In total, more than 6 million people call Houston their home, even if they do not live in the city limits. Houston is also the 10th fastest growing city in the US according to Forbes, so new residents are constantly moving to Houston.
